Ryan AKA “The Ghost” - Southcoast Sports Professional Handicapper
Slade Henning, Owner and Operator of Southcoast Sports and the Southcoast Sports Family of Blogs would like to welcome Ryan AKA “The Ghost” to the Site. The Ghost has been handicapping Sports for over 10 years and has developed a large following at several Sports Monitors and Forums across the Internet. The Ghost will be a very nice addition to the Southcoast Sports Handicapping Staff.
The Ghost’s Handicapping and Betting Philosophy When I think of anything involving risk management I believe the only hurdle one faces is control over their own emotions and impulses. If you play your bank roll responsibly you can give yourself a significant edge, the same way a casino can generate millions in revenue off an edge as small as a 2%. You can actually be more profitable in sports then with stocks if you manage your account well. With a an edge, the law of large numbers will be on your side and the probability will be in your favor for a successful week, month, season, or lifetime.
The Ghost’s Handicapping Experience I have been handicapping as an amateur for over 10 years but never truly pursued it professionally because of my personal commitments until now. Working as a behavioral analyst, while pursuing a masters’ degree in organizational behavior interactions and studies, has allowed me to have a different perspective on how I view cohesion and team performance.
The Ghost’s Special Achievments in Handicapping I currently lead all NBA handicappers by a 2:1 ratio at sports-bettors.com. Also, I had a 63% MLB winning percentage last season.
February 2009 Joined Southcoast Sports as a Professional Handicapper!

The Ghost’s Most Memorable Moment I had an open wager for $4000 on the Detroit Tigers vs. the Colorado Rockies. After leading the entire game by 4 runs comfortably, with 1 out in the top of the ninth Detroit’s closer Todd Jones gave up 5 runs to put Detroit down by one run. I could have bought a plane ticket to Detroit and punched him right in the face. After feeling as though I just watched a team completely collapse, a base hit followed by a walk set the stage for Miguel Cabrera whose clutch 2-run double to the right field gap, secured the 1 run 6-5 Detroit win.
Biggest Win of the Ghost’ Career Every time I win I increase my bankroll, thereby making it bigger. I try and avoid the “all your eggs in one basket” mentality. That is the type of thinking that will make you go bust.
Toughest Loss of The Ghost’s Career I recall putting $20 on a 7 team parlay just for fun one day. When I checked the scores on ESPN I noticed the first 6 teams won and the 7th game was still being played. I was shocked! It was the Yankees @ Tampa Bay, and this was before Tampa Bay was good. When I turned the game on the Yankees had the bases loaded, were down 1 run, and they had A-Rod at the plate. And of course in his usual choke fashion he struck out to a ball in the dirt, which killed the rally and my bet. The upside would have been a couple thousand.
Favorite Team(s) to Play or Fade I always look for opportunities regardless of the team. I believe there is so much parity in sports that any team can win on any night, therefore, I need to look for the factors that will help a team win and give them an edge that particular night.
What You Can Expect From The Ghost I am much different then your typical “run of the mill” handicapper. I take a very eclectic approach to picking games. Yes, I will look at some general trends such as weather, winning/losing streaks, or home vs. road game performance, but I also incorporate statistics, and most importantly psychological influences and behavior. Cognitive patterns are more crucial in sports then past numbers. They are the driving force behind the numbers.
